Dickon Sowerby came into Misselthwaite's grounds from the moors, riding his white pony, Jump. As he approached the servant's entrance of the manor, obviously looking for Mary and/or Colin, he could be heard singing a song,
"Wheear 'as ta bin sin ah saw thee, On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?! Wheear 'as ta bin sin ah saw thee? Wheear 'as ta bin sin ah saw thee? On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?! On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?! On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?!"
He slowed Jump down as he got fairly close to the house.

Mary had been mindlessly wandering the gardens as she heard Dickon's voice rising above the walls and the hedges. She hurriedly rounded the corner, saying, "Hello, Dickon! Hello!" (Sorry it took me so long, school's weighing down, and I had to reread the book to make sure I got everything right. )

Dickon saw Mary round the corner greeting him.
"Aye, good morning, Miss Mary," he greeted back, "how's tha farin' today?"
Dickon slowed Jump to a stop and climbed down off him to speak to Mary face to face, rather than her looking up at him.

"I'm well, and you?" she answered, reaching forward to stroke Jump's nose. There was always something new about Dickon, whether it be finding a bird's nest or seeing a new rosebud on a bush. The small pony whickered and nuzzled her pocket, thinking that maybe she had an apple, or some sugar.

"Aye, I'm grand," Dickon told her, "an' everyone else?"
Dickon saw Jump trying to find some food on Mary, and he reached into his pocket and took out a small apple he had picked earlier that morning.
"Try givin' 'im that, Miss Mary," he said, holding the apple out to Mary.

"Colin's upstairs, the doctor wanted to give him another check up, 'just in case'." Mary shook her head. "Why can't they just accept the fact that he's well?" She smiled as Dickon produced an apple from his pocket, and she hed it out for Jump to take, making sure her fingres were out of the way. Jump was a gentle ponny, but even the getlest ponies have strong teeth.
